This highly integrated, fully-certified solution simplifies IoT device system design.
Murata, an electronics components manufacturer, has unveiled its latest Bluetooth low energy (LE) module, the Type 2EG. It is based on the RSL15 secure Bluetooth 5.2 microcontroller (MCU) from On Semiconductor Corporation (Onsemi).
The primary application focus of the device is on internet-of-things (IoT) edge devices in sectors like industrial and medical. Type 2EG ensures extended battery longevity and secure data transmission, which have emerged as key features for battery-powered IoT devices.
“We are proud to launch this best-in-class product as it helps resolve two of the most pressing issues for those designing IoT applications – power efficiency and security,” said Jue Chang, senior marketing manager at Murata.
The product is expected to have the industry’s lowest power consumption. It adheres to the newest Bluetooth 5.2 standards and has a capability to handle up to 10 concurrent connections.
It has an integrated advanced RISC machine (ARM) Cortex-M33 processor which remains energy efficient even in deep sleep mode, while still monitoring sensor interfaces. The module includes ARM TrustZone and CryptoCell-312 technologies, ensuring data integrity and trustworthiness.
It has both fast and slow clocks for operational and sleep modes. This integration facilitates a simplified design approach for IoT devices, thereby reducing market-entry time.
The compact design of the Type 2EG, measuring 7mm x 7.4mm x 1.0mm, comes with a built-in antenna. It integrates various features, including the Bluetooth LE system-on-chip (SoC) and radio frequency (RF) front end.
In the press release, Michel De Mey, vice president of the Industrial Solutions Division at Onsemi, emphasized the importance of cyber-protection for industrial IoT applications. He praised the new module for its security features and energy efficiency, suggesting it’s the wireless solution original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can rely on.
